Fat Grafting

Volume loss is a key part of how the face ages, and it is experienced by everyone usually starting in your 30s. Filler injections are still the most frequently performed treatments for volume enhancement in all areas of the face, but fat grafting is a popular option for many patents.

Dr. Rodwell offers microfat transfer as well as a revolutionary new technique called nanofat which uses powerful stem cells and growth factors within fat to improve the skin.

Fat grafting (also called fat transfer) is a procedure that involves taking some of your own fat from elsewhere on the body and transferring that to areas of your face that have lost volume. It is highly customized so that the result is appropriate for each individual’s face. The procedure is frequently performed at the same time as a facelift or eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) for a more balanced look.

Why Consider Fat Grafting or Nanofat?

Fat Grafting can:

  • Permanently restore areas of volume loss
  • Create better facial proportion
  • Enhance the results of facelift and eyelid surgery

Nanofat injections can:

  • Reduce under eye dark circles
  • Dramatically improve skin quality
  • Improve fine lines and wrinkles

Dr. Rodwell’s Approach to Fat Grafting

Dr. Rodwell has a very conservative approach to fat transfer procedures. By using microfat and nanofat injection techniques and paying close attention to gently soften areas of volume loss he will help you look more youthful without looking unnatural.  We have all seen people who look overfilled or “puffy,” and unfortunately that is often the result of overdone fat injections with results that should have been avoided.

You and Dr. Rodwell will discuss your concerns and determine the best plan for your unique needs. He will then make educated recommendations as to the areas that should be treated. The goal is to restore youthful fullness and improve skin quality with an appropriate balance with your other features and provide a softer appearance to certain areas of your face.

The fat grafting procedure is performed either under a local anesthetic in the office or under anesthesia in the operating room depending on each patient’s needs and comfort level. Fat grafting only involves one very small incision where the fat is removed (usually the outer thighs or the abdomen). The incision lines will fade over time. The fat is then purified and filtered before injecting using a delicate blunt tip cannula.

You can go home the same day as long as someone is available to drive you home.

What to Expect After Microfat or Nanofat Transfer

You can return home the same day as your procedure. Dr. Rodwell will provide you with full post-op instructions. Most people choose to take at least one week off from work or school.

The fat transfer donor site sometimes needs to have a compression bandage for a day or two. One small suture at the area where fat was removed will be taken out when you see Dr. Rodwell for a follow-up around seven days after your procedure.

There will be some soreness as well as bruising and swelling during the first one to two weeks. This varies depending on the type of procedure being done. You can take pain medication and apply cold packs to reduce discomfort. Keeping your head elevated will also decrease swelling. When all inflammation has subsided, you will see the final result of your fat grafting procedure.

Nanofat injection treatments typically have their best improvement seen four to six months later as the stem cells and growth factors slowly stimulate improved skin quality and collagen production over time.

Fat Grafting FAQs

Is There an Age Restriction on Fat Grafting?

No. Dr. Roswell can administer the fat grafting filler procedure for patients at any age to correct facial asymmetry or acne scarring. He reserves lip augmentation and filling in face hollows for patients in their 20s and up.

What Happens During a Fat Grafting Consultation?

During your facial fat grafting consultation, you will meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in patients achieving their cosmetic goals. Dr. Roswell will discuss what he can achieve and what you can expect during the process. He will review any risks associated with the procedure and educate you on what you should do during recovery. You’ll need to come prepared to discuss your full medical history, as well as the cost and any financial options available.

When Will I Be Able to See My Results?

Once the swelling subsides, you should start to see a difference. Some patients require additional graftings because not all of the transferred fat cells will survive. You should be able to determine the final results after three or four months.

What Are the Associated Risks of Fat Grafting?

Potential complications include:

  • Fatty cysts
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Fat embolism
  • Asymmetry
  • Seroma

Will My Facial Fat Transfer Results Be Permanent?

Your body naturally absorbs fat. Although Dr. Roswell can over-fill the target site initially, success rates of surviving tissue vary from patient to patient. Some patients require more than one treatment session to attain the level of volume necessary for the best results. If you gain weight after the procedure, it may affect the treated area.
